#4 (26) 2003 Academicians of Graphic Design. Part 2Maxim ZhukovYuriy Gerchuk Without doubt, Maxim Zhukov’s work is of key importance to the development of book design in Russia. From 1965 Zhukov worked for „Iskusstvo“organized Publishers in Moscow as a designer and design editor. In the course of that work he has managed to establish a new model in book design — functional, well organized, highly sensitive to the structure of the text and the imagery. That contributed to the establishment of a certain, distinctive house style that marked the books published by „Iskusstvo,“ and had a wider effect beyond its walls. From 1977 Zhukov worked for the United Nations, specializing in multilingual typography and graphic design. He is also involved in type design, consulting for individual designers and type foundries. For a few years he taught typographic design at his alma mater, Moscow Printing Institute; he now teaches at Parsons School of Design, and at The Cooper Union, both in New York. Zhukov writes on typography and type design. He is a member of a number of Russian and American professional societies and associations, a member of the ATypI Board of Directors, and the Country Delegate for Russia. Maxim Zhukov’s influence and presence on Russian graphic design scene persists. He serves as liaison between the domestic and the global typographic communities, organizes exhibitions and contests; he lectures, judges competitions, etc. His fervor and enthusiasm cannot be tempered by either time or separation. ![]()
